چکیده
Urban civilization has a high impact on the environment and human health. The pollution level of indoor air can be 2–5 times higher than outdoor pollution, sometimes it reaches up to 100 or more in natural/mechanical ventilated buildings. Even though people spend about 90% their time indoors, importance quality is less noticed. Indoor treated with techniques such as chemical purification, ventilation, isolation, removing pollutions by plants (phytoremediation). Among these techniques, phytoremediation not given proper attention and, therefore, focus our review paper. Phytoremediation an affordable environmentally friendly means purify polluted air. Can ornamental potted plants remove volatile organic compounds from indoor air? A review.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are found in indoor air, and many of these can affect human health (e.g. formaldehyde and benzene are carcinogenic). Plants affect the levels of VOCs in indoor environments, thus they represent a potential green solution for improving indoor air quality that at the same time can improve human health. This article reviews scientific studies of plants' ability to...
متن کاملPhytoremediation of particulate matter from indoor air by Chlorophytum comosum L. plants
Higher plants, including spider plants, are able to take up and degrade/detoxify various pollutants in the air. Although nearly 120 plant species have been tested for indoor air phytoremediation, to the best of the authors' knowledge, data on particulate matter (PM) phytoremediation from indoor air are not yet available in literature. This work determined the ability of spider plants to take up...
متن کاملPhytoremediation of Explosives using Transgenic Plants
In the past century, several explosive compounds have become the major soil contaminants causing health and economic challenges to the society. In the U.S. alone millions of hectares of land are contaminated by various forms of explosives. The two most dangerous explosives, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and hexahydro-1,3,5trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (Royal Demolition Explosive; RDX), are major enviro...
متن کاملPhytoremediation of Metals Using Transgenic Plants
An ideal plant for environmental cleanup can be envisioned as one with high biomass production, combined with superior capacity for pollutant tolerance, accumulation, and/or degradation, depending on the type of pollutant and the phytoremediation technology of choice. With the use of genetic engineering, it is feasible to manipulate a plant’s capacity to tolerate, accumulate, and/or metabolize ...
متن کاملPhytoremediation of selenium using transgenic plants.
Selenium (Se) is a micronutrient for many organisms but also toxic at higher concentrations. Both selenium deficiency and toxicity are serious problems worldwide. Owing to the similarity of selenium to sulfur, plants readily take up and assimilate selenate via sulfur transporters and enzymes and can even volatilize selenium. Selenium accumulating or volatilizing plants may be used for phytoreme...
